Who’s in Your Village? Why Knowing Your Support Network Matters

We often hear that “it takes a village to raise a child”… but what about the mother?

Pregnancy, birth and early parenthood can bring huge changes to your body, your routines, your relationships and your sense of self. While so much attention naturally goes towards the baby, mothers need support too. And support doesn't always mean someone coming over to hold the baby.

Sometimes you need someone to bring dinner. Someone to listen. Someone to take your older child to school. Someone who can give you an hour to shower, sleep or simply breathe. And sometimes you need a healthcare professional who can help you navigate something you're struggling with.

Your village doesn't have to look a certain way

Your village might be made up of family and friends, your partner, neighbours, colleagues, community members or healthcare professionals. And different people may have different roles.

You might have someone who is fantastic with your baby, but isn't the person you'd call when you're having a difficult day. You might have a friend who knows exactly how to make you laugh, and a family member who is always ready to bring food. You might have a professional you trust when you need advice or support.

There is no right or wrong village.

What matters is knowing who you trust and what kind of support you can ask from them.

Have the conversation before you need it

One of the simplest things you can do is talk about your support network with your partner before the baby arrives, or at any point during parenthood.

  • Who could you call if you needed practical help?

  • Who could you call if you were feeling overwhelmed?

  • Who could help with the baby?

  • Who could help with older children?

  • Who would you feel comfortable asking to come over for an hour?

  • And who would you contact if you needed professional support?

Having these conversations ahead of time can make it easier to ask for help when you actually need it.
