Matrescence with Tarryn Thomson (Occupational Therapist)
In this episode, I talk about matrescence; the physical, emotional, psychological and identity shift that happens as we become mothers. I was only introduced to this term more than a year postpartum, and, like so many things in motherhood, I found myself wishing I had known about it sooner.
We talk about the parts of motherhood we don't always feel safe saying out loud: loving your child deeply while missing parts of your old life, feeling touched out and exhausted, struggling with the loss of identity, and wondering who you are now that you're a mother.
I also share my experience reading Lucy Jones' Matrescence: On the Metamorphosis of Pregnancy, Childbirth and Motherhood and how, in many ways, the book felt healing to me. It takes a powerful look at the societal expectations placed on mothers and challenges the way we speak about motherhood - particularly the pressure to be endlessly grateful, completely self-sacrificing and constantly devoted.
Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that two things can be true at once: motherhood can be the most beautiful experience of your life, and it can also be incredibly hard.
You don't have to enjoy every moment. You don't have to compare your motherhood to your friend's, your neighbour's or someone else's online. And you were never meant to do this alone.
We talk about the importance of honest conversations, embracing the messy moments, finding community and creating the kind of support that mothers need to truly thrive.
If you've ever thought, "I love my child, but I'm struggling," this episode is for you.
I would LOVE to hear your thoughts and reflections in the comments below.
